Best Essential Oils for Treating Common Colds and Sore Throats

1. FRANKINCENSE ESSENTIAL OIL


Frankincense essential oil has remarkable refurbishing and curative qualities. It has natural cold-fighting dominion, such as antiseptic, expectorant, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties which makes it a perfect essential oil for treating a cold or the flu. Frankincense is also critical for reducing anxiety which can help with worrying about missing work or other necessary events when you are unwell.

Remedies:

Lovely Hot Bath


The steam emanating from the hot water will feat as a decongestant, and the blend will help to minimize aches and pains.

o 2 drops frankincense essential oil
o 2 drops orange essential oil
o 1 drop eucalyptus essential oil
o Mix the oils into the bath water


Serene Steam Inhalation- This will help surely relieve congestion and blocked airways.

o Add some drops of frankincense essential oil in a bowl of hot, steaming water; you can also add the blend of the oils mentioned above in the bath blend recipe.
o Cover your head with a nice and thick towel, lean over the bowl safely and inhale the steam until all the oils have been consumed.
o Repeat upto three to four times in a day or as needed for congestion and headache relief. You will feel the difference in a day alone!

Soothing Hot or Cold Compress- For congestion and headache relief.

o Either dip a washcloth in hot water or microwave a dampened washcloth and pour several drops of frankincense essential oil on it.
o For its decongestant properties, add a drop of eucalyptus essential oil, as well.
o If there is a headache then for its relief, add several drops of lavender essential oil.
o Put the washcloth on your forehead or chest for quick relief.


2. OREGANO ESSENTIAL OIL


Oregano is an extremely powerful antimicrobial and antiviral essential oil. As a matter of fact, a recent study shows that oregano essential oil can greatly reduce symptoms of upper respiratory maladies including coughs and sore throats.

Remedies:

Subtle Sublingual Administration: Place a few drops under your tongue only if you have a top-quality, pure, ingestible form of oregano essential oil. Place a few drops under your tongue and let them absorb for a minimum of 30 seconds before you swallow it. This method can provide immediate relief of your cold symptoms.

Soothing Massage or Divine Diffuser Blend:
Create a therapeutic diffuser blend, or add a carrier oil to create a massage blend.

o 2 drops oregano essential oil
o 2 drops rosemary essential oil
o 2 drops peppermint essential oil
o 2 drops eucalyptus essential oil
o For a massage blend, add all of the above in 4 spoons of carrier oil.


3. TEA TREE ESSENTIAL OIL


Tea tree essential oil possesses antiviral, antiseptic and antimicrobial qualities and utilizing this essential oil for colds is fantastic because it eradicates a cough, bronchial congestion, and sore throat. Tea tree essential oil is also a fantastic and natural disinfectant, so it can be used to kill germs on surfaces as well as in the air.


Tea tree essential oil can be a mild sensitizer, hence be sure to perform a patch test before using it for the first time.


Remedies:

As a Cough’ Remedy: superintend 8 to 12 drops of tea tree essential oil on your sinuses and neck areas.

As a Massage Bend:


To fight viral infections just mix the following:

o 4 drops tea tree essential oil
o 4 drops bergamot essential oil
o 2 drops black pepper essential oil
o 4 tsp carrier oil
o Massage on your chest and the soles of your feet


Diffuser Blend:


To disinfect the air in your home or office

o 4 drops tea tree essential oil
o 4 drops lemon essential oil


4. EUCALYPTUS ESSENTIAL OIL


Eucalyptus essential oil is made up of about seventy-two percent of eucalyptol making it an extremely efficient in treating common colds, stuffy and blocked nose, chesty coughs and to ease breathing when suffering from cold and other congestions.

Remedies:


Use it in a diffuser:


o Pour several (about ten to fifteen) drops of eucalyptus essential oil in a diffuser and let the aroma spread in the environment.
Steam Inhalation:
o You can also add a few drops in a container filled with hot water and do some steam inhalation,


Hot tub bath:


o A bathtub filled with hot enough water and mixed with twenty to twenty-five drops of Eucalyptus essential oil.


Vaporizer:


o Using eucalyptus essential oil in a steam vaporizer is great because it adds moisture and humidity into the air allowing you to breathe it in. That warm steam helps to loosen the congestion that has built up in the nose and lungs (in case of a nasty cough) so you can better cough it up as well as sooth the throat if it’s dry.

There isn’t sufficient enough evidence to prove that breathing in steam reduces severity of a cold, but it sure does have good results when it comes to helping relax common cold, stuffy nose, sore throat and coughing fits.


Or you could also mix the following too:


o 3 drops eucalyptus essential oil
o 2 drops lavender essential oil
o 2 drop peppermint essential oil


Diffuse or vaporize- To prevent airborne infections from spreading in your home or office


o 3 drops eucalyptus essential oil
o 3 drops tea tree essential oil


Essential oil chest rub- To Calm Chesty Coughs


o 4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
o 2 drops of myrrh essential oil
o 4 drops of cedarwood essential oil
o 4 spoons of any carrier oil
o Massage the blend on the chest, morning and evening


For an Aching Body use this combination 


o 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil
o 2 drops ginger essential oil
o 4 drops rosemary essential oil


You could mix it in your tub for nice and calming hot bath, or you could even do hot or cold compress with this mixture of necessary essential oils or mixed with a carrier oil use the concoction as a body massage blend.

 


5. LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL


Lavender essential oil is my favorite scent amongst all the other essential oils and has been loved by millions or so for centuries. Lavender has a refreshing aroma; the stems and leaves give camphoraceous notes, which means a substance having medicinal or aromatic characteristics similar to those of camphor that is often softened by floral sweetness from the real flowers.

Lavender essential oil brings deep relaxation and improves compassion and gentleness from within. It is wonderful as healing oil which is famous as a natural pain reliever, anxiety reducer, and treatment for insomnia and is good for skin ailments too.

It’s precisely useful for respiratory ailments and other symptoms such as influenza, colds, sinus congestion, and coughs. Furthermore, lavender oil can alleviate the breathing problems when phlegm is trapped in the lungs and sinuses.


Remedies:


For Congestion Relief:


o Rub several drops of lavender essential oil on the chest, on your sinus and neck area, and back for a quick relief.


As a massage blend- For body aches and pains


o 4 drops of lavender essential oil
o 4 drops of rosemary essential oil
o 2 drops of black pepper essential oil
o 4 spoons of any carrier oil


Use this blend in a diffuser / humidifier- As a Sleep Aid and a Decongestant:



o 4 drops of lavender essential oil
o 4 drops of chamomile essential oil
o 4 drops of cedar wood essential oil

Note: All of these blends with lavender essential oil are also useful for relieving anxiety while you're are feeling down.


6. LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL


Lemon for ages has been considered a cure for all fruit and its essential oil, especially for treating the common cold, flu and for reducing fever. Furthermore, lemon essential oil also is a fantastic treatment for fatigue as it is an energizing essential oil.

Lemon essential oil has antioxidants, it is antibacterial in nature, and has anti-inflammatory properties, which not only makes it ideal for fighting viruses, but also for reducing cold and flu symptoms such as coughing, congestion, swollen glands and bodily aches and pains.
Some other remarkable features about lemon essential oil are that, it is found right in the peel of the lemon!

You can cook with the peel or even with the rind (a thick and a firm outer coat or covering is called rind).


One can also use the peels as a room disinfectant by placing the peels right in your fireplace and burning them to release the oils and aroma. Isn’t that wonderful? You can also add several drops to a pot of boiling water and allow the steam to escape into the room! Lemon just does not stop to surprise me ever pleasantly!

Note: As citrus based oil, lemon essential oil is phototoxic, so avoid using it if you are heading outdoors into the sunlight.

Remedies


To Fight Fatigue - You can create a diffuser blend or a massage blend by adding these oils to a carrier oil


o 4 drops of lemon essential oil
o 4 drops of myrtle essential oil
o 2 drops of manuka essential oil
o 4 spoons of carrier oil as a massage blend


To Fight Cold or the Flu - You can use this combination as a diffuser blend or a massage blend


o 4 drops of lemon essential oil
o 4 drops of tea tree essential oil
o 4 drops of lavender essential oil
o 4 spoons carrier oil for massage blends


7. PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL


Peppermint essential oil has a pungent, cooling, and a menthol aroma with clean, sweet highlight. This essential oil rekindles the sucked out energy and heightens positivity. Peppermint oil can help to improve concentration, and battle fatigue, as well as sooth nausea and upset stomachs and I, can say this with conviction as I have been using this oil for meditating better.

o 3 drops of peppermint essential oil
o 3 drops of nutmeg essential oil
o 3 drops of rosemary essential oil
o 4 spoons carrier oil for a massage blend



Massage Blend- To Relieve Sore Muscles and Bodily Pain due to cold and flu


o 2 drops of peppermint essential oil
o 4 drops of rosemary essential oil
o 4 drops of spruce essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil


For a Hot or Cold Compress:


o 2 drops of peppermint essential oil
o 2 drops of yarrow essential oil
o Add one spoon of the carrier oil to the essential oils if you think the concoction is too strong


Steam Inhalation:


o 3 drops of peppermint essential oil
o 2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
o If you have a headache, then add two drops of lavender essential oil.


8. LEMONGRASS ESSENTIAL OIL


Lemongrass essential oil is commonly used in making Ayurvedic medicines. It is used to help in lowering fevers and calm the nervous system. Traditional Chinese Medicine endorses the use of lemongrass essential oil to sooth stomach aches and also to relieve headaches, colds, the flu, and rheumatism.

Lemongrass essential oil has antimicrobial, antiseptic, analgesic properties. It is also used as an astringent. That’s not all my friends, this oil also carries bactericidal, deodorant, sedative, diuretic, fungicidal, properties…phew! All these qualities make it a perfect essential oil for colds and flu relief.


Note: Lemongrass essential oil is a moderate irritant substance hence make sure to do a skin patch test to ensure it will not irate your skin. Lemongrass is phototoxic, as well, so do not use in the sunlight. Furthermore, it is best only to use two drops in your bath water as it can sting.

Remedies:

To help lift the murky feeling:


Pour a few drops either on a tissue or your pillowcase and inhale slowly and deeply or you could even inhale this essential oil keeping just a little distance straight from the bottle!

For Insomnia:

Vaporize:


o 4 drops of lemongrass essential oil
o 4 drops of lavender essential oil

To relieve body aches and pains:

Massage Blend:


o 2 drops of lemongrass essential oil
o 4 drops of ginger essential oil
o 4 drops of lavender essential oil
o 4 spoons of carrier oil


To Soothe an Upset Stomach:

Use the following mixture in a diffuser or as a massage blend:

o 2 drops of lemongrass essential oil
o 3 drops of peppermint essential oil
o 3 drops of manderin essential oil
o 4 spoons of carrier oil for the massage blend


9. CLOVE BUD ESSENTIAL OIL


The clove tree is famous for its intense aromatic quality, This Indonesian evergreen tree produces the clove nails that are so renowned as a spice all over the world. For centuries, toothache has been treated using dried cloves. People have been chewing on it to release their essential oils which have a strong numbing effect.

Clove Bud Essential Oil is used for any gum discomfort too and is still used as an antiseptic, pain relieving remedy today globally. The essential oil from a ripe clove is too strong to use in aromatherapy, however the unripe buds of the clove flowers produce oil that is much gentler in nature, yet still wonderfully warming, spicy and fresh!

Clove bud essential oil has antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral and antiseptic, properties. Clove oil is used for treating a variety of other health disorders including indigestion, coughs, sore throat, headache, aching muscles, stress, blood impurities and asthma.


Note: Clove essential oil can be mildly irritating, so perform a patch test before using and only use a couple of drops in bathwater if you have sensitive skin.


Remedies:

Use these composites as massage oil with added carrier oil or in a diffuser without the carrier oil. These recipes can be used in a hot bath too but, by reducing the ingredients by half in quantity.

To boost the blood flow:

o 2 drops of clove bud essential oil
o 2 drops of cinnamon leaf essential oil
o 6 drops of mandarin essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil


For the improvement of the Immune System:

o 2 drops of clove bud essential oil
o 4 drops of cardamom essential oil
o 4 drops of bergamot essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil


To Strengthen Mental Weakness:

o 3 drops of clove bud essential oil
o 3 drops of tangerine essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil


To Relieve Chesty Coughs:

o 2 drops of clove bud essential oil
o 4 drops of myrtle essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil


10. GINGER ESSENTIAL OIL


Ginger is a natural digestive catalyst and is also beneficial for managing colds, coughs, sore throats, and flu. It is also helpful in treating rheumatism, aching muscles and joints, and malaria too!

Fresh ginger is very warming and helps so fight viral infections by slightly raising the body temperature which makes it harder for viruses to sustain themselves.


Note: Ginger is mildly sensitizing so kindly perform a patch test before using it for the first time.


Remedies:


Increase blood flow to cold limbs with this blend:


o 2 drops of ginger essential oil
o 4 drops of black pepper essential oil
o 4 drops of cardamom essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil


Relieve Indigestion and Nausea with this blend:
Vaporize:


o 2 drops of ginger essential oil
o 4 drops of peppermint essential oil
o 4 drops of orange essential oil


Ease out the anxiety during illness:


o 2 drops of ginger essential oil
o 4 drops of sweet orange essential oil
o 4 drops of lavender essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil for a massage blend


To feel better during illness take a hot bath with this blend:


o 2 drops of ginger essential oil
o 3 drops of cardamom essential oil


To Relieve Muscular aches and pains:


o 2 drops of ginger essential oil
o 4 drops of coriander seed essential oil
o 4 drops of rosemary essential oil
o 4 spoon of the carrier oil


11. CYPRESS ESSENTIAL OIL


Did you know that Cypress trees belong to one of the oldest plant families on the earth?

The Cupressaceae, (its botanical name) is some 17 million years old plant species! Cypress is an excellent essential oil for healing colds and flu because of its anti-toxic effect. It's also antispasmodic and naturaly anti-inflammatory.


Remedies:


To release muscles spasms:


o 4 drops of cypress essential oil
o 2 drops of ginger essential oil
o 4 drops of marjoram essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil


To remove toxins from the muscles:

o 4 drops of cypress essential oil
o 4 drops of grapefruit essential oil
o 2 drops of juniper berry essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil


To Reduce Bodily Aches and Pains:

o 4 drops of cypress essential oil
o 4 drops of rosemary essential oil
o 2 drops of black pepper essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil


12. BASIL ESSENTIAL OIL


Basil essential oil is a well-known herb used in Italian cooking recopies. You can apply basil essential oil to fatigued or sore muscles and joints also to relieve swelling and pain in body.

Either apply superficially or diffuse basil essential oil to assist in clear and smooth breathing and also in reducing congestion. Use basil essential oil topically on soles of the feet or by diffusing it into the air to fight mental and physical fatigue. It is used for treating indigestion and nausea.


Note: Basil essential oil must not be used during pregnancy and because it is a mild sensitizer hence performing a patch test before using topically is suggested.


Remedies:

Relieve mental and physical fatigue by vaporizing or using as a massage blend with carrier oil

o 2 drops of basil essential oil
o 4 drops of lavender essential oil
o 4 drops of sandalwood essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil

To Improve Concentration:
Vaporize:

o 2 drops of basil essential oil
o 4 drops of myrtle essential oil

To improve strength during illness: Vaporize or use as a massage blend with the carrier oil:

o 4 drops of basil essential oil
o 4 drops of orange essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil

For relief in Congestion:

o 4 drops of basil essential oil
o 2 drops of peppermint essential oil
o 2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
o 4 spoons of the carrier oil for a chest rub

The best oils to soothe a sore throat are:

o Tea Tree
o Sage
o Eucalyptus
o Peppermint
o Rosemary
o Lemon
o Garlic
o Ginger

Gargle: The smoothest way to relieve a sore throat is utilizing essential oils in a gargle. Just add one to two drops of essential oils to half a glass of lukewarm water and gargle for a few minutes to get rid of the soreness in the throat. Do not swallow the mixture after gargling!


Inhalation: one wonderful way and the easiest way is to pour one to two drops of the essential oil into the palms of your hands and rub them together to spread the oil.

Now just cup them over your nose and take 4-6 deep and slow breaths to relieve a sore throat. By any chance if you are always on a move then just add two to four drops on a cotton ball and secure the cotton/cloth in a zip lock bag to take with you.


Steam: Another fantastic way to soothe a sore throat is by inhaling the steam of boiling water with a few drops of the above mentioned essential oils. Cover your head with a towel and breathe in the steam.


Sore throats rub: By adding five to ten drops of essential oils to 2 spoons of the carrier oil or any natural unscented lotion you can make a nice smooth blend and rub the essential oil mixture onto your neck, chest and behind the ears to find a relief from a sore throat.
